Pablo Seoane (Ferrol, Galicia, 1968) has become one of the most relevant figures of Galician jazz of the last decade. In his role as pianist, composer, trainer and writer, his endless energy is conveyed to the audience through his own personal style: one which merges the roots of contemporary jazz tunes with forms and improvisations typical of classical jazz in an open experimental dialogue between tradition and modern harmonies and rhythms.

Frederic Mompou (Barcelona, 1893-1987) characterized his own compositions as a kind of “music for inner hearing”, in the sense that with minimal resources the composer intended to “penetrate into the profound depths of the soul and the remotest and most secret regions of the spirit”. Pianist Lluís Vidal (Barcelona, 1959) was somehow obsessed with Mompou’s music, to such an extent that he even lived in the same building where Mompou spent the final days of his life.

With singer Sidsel Endresen (Norway, 1952), Vigo’s Imaxina Sons Jazz Festival presents a unique vocal experience which demonstrates that, when used as an instrument, the human voice has no limits within the boundaries of jazz. This singer from Norway conducts her voice at different levels, at times dominating the stage, at times playing with textures more in line with the other instruments, melting with them. Sidsel Endresen, with her unlimited extraordinary imagination, is a poet who needs music as a form of expression, and is the best representative of atonal music.

A duet of cellos on the stage? That’s right. Such as Portuguese critic Rui Eduardo Paes reminds us, this is an oddity in Western musical standards, and we have to look back to the repertoire of Romantic composer Jacques Offenbach to find the roots which have inspired this novel jazz proposal. By reintroducing this spirit and with an adventurous aim in mind, Ulrich Mitzlaff and Miguel Mira draw the rules of an innovative game where cellos engage in the search for the very essence of this instrument (and of its inherent values), which might suddenly be strayed from its most popular sonority. It is no overstatement to say that the two instrumentalists ‘plunge’ into their cellos

Paolo Angeli, Sasha Agranov and Oriol Roca are by themselves three very original and different artists. Over the last year they have joined the forces of their ingenuous humour on the stage with the Piccola Orchestra Gagarin project, which was established after a concert in Barcelona. Just like that of the Russian astronaut fifty years ago, their journey to the outer limits has an uncertain course. The concerts of the Piccola Orchestra Gagarin involve a unique experience.

With its fifteen members, the Portuguese Lisbon Underground Music Ensemble resembles the traditional big band format. Their music, however, is a long way away from any kind of traditional conception. Their first CD (Lisbon Underground Music Ensemble), published in 2010, reveals their close links with pop and rock music, and very particularly the love that the Portuguese feel for Frank Zappa and dance music. The main instrumental pillars of the band are the flute, the clarinet and the soprano saxophone. Some band members come from the realms of jazz, while others come from those of classical music. Under the conduction of composer and pianist Marco Barroso, LUME merges the influences of funk music, of boogie woogie and of the Impressionist environments. Moreover, the band blends written and improvised music and has become one of the most celebrated and welcome jazz events of Portugal of the last few years.

The highly talented Xan Campos Trío brings to Imaxina Sons a concert loaded with the latest and most innovative Galician-made jazz trends. Xan Campos, a young pianist from Cangas (sitting on the opposite shore of the Ria de Vigo) has had an amazing evolution as an instrumentalist. He met drummer Iago Fernández at Pontenvedra’s Permanent Jazz Seminar and soon established a solid musical partnership with him. Later on, the two met double bassist Horacio García at the Basque Country High School of Music, where he was attending high level courses in jazz music. Since then −more than five years ago− the three established this Trio which has just published the album Orixe Cero. Here the pianist strived to work with varied rhythmic structures and ended with a number of catchy tunes which emerged through the creative process.

Imaxina Sons has always been concerned about the dissemination of European jazz trends and identities, and, therefore, had a debt pending with one of the leading figures of the European jazz stage of the last decades. For that reason, it is an enormous pleasure to have been able to pay off the audience of Vigo’s jazz festival this time. Nils Petter Molvaer (Sula, Norway, 1960) is a trumpeter, composer and producer with an ambitious professional career in the world of jazz, who has tried varied styles. Undoubtedly, he has become one of the main referents of jazz in the last decade with his largely successful album Khmer (ECM, 1997), a turning point that charted the course of his future career and put him in full control of his musical journey. Nils Petter Molvaer always intends to do something different, and comes to this edition of Imaxina Sons accompanied by electronics.

Pianist Neil Cowley (London, 1972) describes himself as an outsider. His frantic activity and his musical success over the last few years, however, place him in a central position as one of the leading figures of current jazz trends. Or perhaps of pop music, since Neil Cowley makes a very special reading of the popular music of the latest decades in terms of jazz. The energy of this pianist −who claims to be “on the margins”− seems to be inexhaustible: He collaborates with icons of pop music, such as the group Stereophonics, writes music for a publicity campaign of mobile phones on TV, wins prizes and awards, and even has the opportunity to have been developing for the last six years a solid project leading his own trio.

In a short period of time the British band Portico Quartet has gained widespread prestige and recognition within jazz circles: they made a long journey at cruise speed. Some claim that this is a band of twenty somethings with an extraordinary perspective ahead; others say that this is an already mature formation with their cards already laid on the table. Duncan Bellamy on drums, Milo Fitzpatrick on double bass, Keir Vine, on hang and keyboard, and Jack Wyllie, on tenor and soprano saxophones and electronics are the twenty something-year-olds of the band. They want to fulfil the expectations raised around them, and over the last year they have performed endlessly and have prepared abundant new material. With their first album they hit the commercial lists of the British radio formula, and ever since then they have continued with their winning streak, with a recipe which combines a taste of jazz with electronics and the rhythms of world music. They are, in fact, part of the catalogue or Real Word Records, the company founded by Womad and Peter Gabriel. On the stage the hang sets the course of their music, and it is not strange to see them using three different ones in the same live performance.
