Price: 12-€ (butaca); 11-€ (1º anf.); 10-€ (2º anf.); 9-€ (3º anf.)Nani García (Piano) Clunia JazzClunia Jazz was established in 1983 by late saxophonist Antonio Cal, double bassist Baldo Martínez, pianist Nani García, and drummist Fernando Llorca. Clunia was one of the earliest Galician jazz bands and soon gained the recognition of master pianist Teté Montoliu, when they played the role of supporting band in one of his concerts in Galicia’s capital Santiago de Compostela. That same year they recorded Clunia Jazz, the band’s first album, and participated in Donostia’s Jazzaldia 9th International Jazz Festival, where the band was awarded with the second prize to the best band, and Nani García was honoured as the best composer. Clunia remained active ever since and has now become one of Galicia’s most long-lasting groups. Their collaborations with various renowned jazz artists –Jorge Pardo, María Joâo, Tom Guillion, Kenny Wheeler, and Paolo Fresu, among others– earned national and international recognition for the band, as they won prizes and honourable mentions in influential jazz festivals worldwide. Twenty five years later and with the incorporation of Roberto Somoza on the saxophone, this issue of Imaxinasons ’08 brings us the opportunity to enjoy their music while celebrating their anniversary. Is there any better place for such a plan? Nani GarcíaNani attended the lessons of Mariano Cortez and Uffe Sandberg in Sweden. He returned to Spain in 1981 and the following year formed Clunia Jazz. He has worked, among others, with Maria João, Perico Sambeat and Jorge Pardo, and is musical producer and arranger of various Galician artists; among these his production and arrangements of one of Uxía’ s records is most salient. He now combines that job with his recitals with his trio and Clunia. Baldo MartínezBaldo Martínez is one of the most influential double bassists of European contemporary jazz trends in Spain. His first album, titled No país dos ananos, was well received by the critics; the following year (1998) he launched Juego de niños. At the Guimarães 1999 Jazz Festival, Baldo headed the so-called Projecto Miño, which presented a repertoire based on Portuguese and Galician tunes performed by a nine-member band. He has played in festivals throughout Europe, including Donostia, Madrid, Matosinhos Rabat, Paris, Roma, Munich, Cologne and Perpignan, and in Mexico’s Eurojazz Festival, an overseas exhibition of European jazz trends. Fernando LlorcaEHe first got in touch with music in 1973, being the drums his initial instrument of choice. In 1977 he established Outeiro, the group with which Llorca published his first album Ollos de marzal in 1980. He was a founding member of Clunia in 1982 with Nani García and Baldo Martínez; with the latter he recorded four albums. In 1987 he collaborated with Polish saxophonist Andrezj Olejniczak’s quartet, with Horacio Fumero on the double bass and Jean Luc Vallet on the piano. He now combines his work in Clunia with his musical activities with the Fernando Llorca Quartet, along with his teaching efforts and collaborations with various solo instrumentalists, and is a jazz instructor at the A Coruña High School of Music. Roberto SomozaRoberto Somoza initiated his musical training at the early age of eight, as a clarinet student at the A Coruña High School of Music. When he was fourteen he was strongly attracted by jazz and learned the basics of the saxophone on his own account. His jazz training was then complemented by seminars given by Irakere, Pedro Iturralde, Benny Wallace, Chucho Valdés, and James Williams. Currently, he gives high-level saxophone lessons at A Coruña and shares a number of projects with various instrumentalists, such as Uxía, Maite Dono, Susana Seivane, Nani García, Alberto Conde, and with Portuguese vocalist João Afonso. He is also involved in bands like Marcos Teira Quartet, Fanjazz, Fernando Llorca Atlantic Band, Imaxina Jazz Orchestra and Clunia itself, where he has played with trumpeter Kenny Wheeler in 2004. Somoza participates in albums of varied groups and nature, and is co-director and coordinator of the Imaxina Jazz Orchestra with Baldo Martínez and Alberto Conde, a band for which he also composes tunes.

Zinco is also the title of Galan’s second album (Roho was the name of his first work), and includes original tunes with strong influences of Mark Turner, Chris Cheek and, above all, Kurt Rosenwinkel, to whom one of the tunes is dedicated. His collaborations with Enrico Rava, Paolo Fresu, Gianluigi Trovesi, Don Byron and Chris Speed, among many others, drove him to tour numerous European jazz festivals, always enjoying the good company and support of his Italian quintet. The Gramelot Ensemble moves between the waters of Italian traditional folk structure and the freedom allowed by jazz improvisation. The blend results in a diversified, dynamic and, above all, truly fascinating regional and global cocktail of tunes and sounds, and turns into a moving and exciting experience – that escapes formal classifications – for the enjoyment of the Imaxinsons audience.Ralph AlessiTrained extensively in classical music, Ralph Alessi has performed with the San Francisco Symphonic Orchestra as a freelancer in various opportunities. Enrico Rava QuintetoAuditorio “Martín Codax” do Conservatorio Superior de Música. 29.06.2008, 20:30. Price: FreeEnrico Rava Quinteto en “The Words and the Days”Enrico Rava (Trumpet) Enrico RavaEnrico Rava is one of the greatest European trumpeters of the time. He first joined the free movement, but gradually opened himself up to new jazz trends and styles. Rava is a highly refined and tuneful musician, strongly influenced by jazz masters like Miles Davis, and has played with Gato Barbieri, William Parker and Stefano Bollani, among others. His musical journey began with the piano, but soon turned to the grounds of the trombone as a self-taught person. After attending one of his 1956 live concerts, Miles Davis’ influence diverted Rava’s route once again, this time to the field of the guitar. One year later he began to play modern jazz and to participate in jam sessions with the band of pianist Maurizio Lama. In 1964 he met Argentinian saxophonist Gato Barbieri at the Bologna Jazz Festival, and soon began to collaborate and perform with his quintet; the result of this was their joint album Complete Communion. That same year Rava recorded The forest and the zoo. with Mal Waldron and Steve Lacy, lasting the collaboration with the quartet of Lacy until 1967. Since 1972 he has established his own bands with world renowned artists like John Abercrombie, Bruce Ditmas and Jack DeJohnette, and has toured North America, Argentina and Colombia. In 1976 the tour is in Europe, where he takes part in seminars, festivals and concerts. As a composer, his melodic sensitivity is most remarkable: although comprised within the boundaries of jazz he can manage to move freely in different registers, or even bring to his tunes the musical influence of Italian traditional singing, of Argentinian tango or even of funk and rock. Price: 12-€ (butaca); 11-€ (1º anf.); 10-€ (2º anf.); 9-€ (3º anf.)Wayne ShorterWayne Shorter changed his original clarinet for a tenor saxophone before he joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, the band he headed with Lee Morgan. In 1964 Shorter joined the Miles Davis Quintet, for which he composed numerous tunes until 1970, the year he left the band. When Miles Davis made his transition from acoustic to electronic jazz in 1968, Shorter also travelled from the tenor to the soprano saxophone, which was better suited for electronic sounds. As regards his solo career – at this point with Blue Note –, and apart from navigating through the waters of hard bop, he also paid a visit to the worlds of atonalism and fusion. In 1970 he joined forces with Joe Zawinul and Miroslav Vitous to establish the world recognized jazz-fusion band Weather Report, an adventure lasting up to 1985. At that time, his career as a soloist bore its fruits in the form of the album Native Dancer, a fusion of jazz and Brazilian rhythms with the participation of Milton Nascimento. Shorter established V.S.O.P. with former collaborators of Miles Davies, including Ron Carter and Herbie Hancock. Later these collaborations continued with Hancock and with The Rolling Stones. At Imaxinasons, Wayne Shorter will enjoy the company of three of his closest collaborators in previous world tours: pianist Danilo Pérez, double bassist John Patitucci and drummist Brian Blade. Danilo PérezPanamanian pianist and composer Danilo Pérez has been nominated for the Grammy Awards three times. In 2002 he was nominated by the Jazz Journalist Association for the Best Pianist of the Year Award. His distinctive blend of Pan-American jazz –the merger of Panama and Latin traditional music and jazz– gained him credit and world recognition. Since 1990 he leads a most successful group, according to the critics. His album Panamonk (Impulse! Records) was characterized as a «Masterpiece of jazz» by the New York Times, and was selected among the 50 most outstanding piano jazz albums by the Downbeat Magazine. He has played and recorded with jazz world stars, such as Dizzy Gillespie, Jack DeJonhette, Tito Puente, and Wynton Marsalis, among others. John PatitucciJohn Patitucci was born in New York in 1959, and has played and recorded albums with highly reputed and diversified artists like B. B. King, Dizzy Gillespie, Bon Jovi, Stan Getz, Sting and Astrid Gilberto. In 1985 Patitucci joined Chick Corea for the Elektric and Akoustic Bands, an innovative avant-garde project for the jazz panorama. He took the top positions of the Billboard Jazz Lists with his first album, and was recognized during four consecutive years (1993 to 1996) as the best jazz bassist by the Bass Player Magazine. He keeps a close contact with the educational arena and performs with his band, John Patitucci Quartet,, as well as with Wayne Shorter and with Herbie Hancock Quintet. Brian BladeBrian Blade was born in Louisiana and brought up in New Orleans, the cradle of modern drums playing. Strongly influenced by Ellis Marsalis, Blade has toured the world and recorded with internationally renowned artists like Joshua Redman, Kenny Garret, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Daniel Lanois and Joni Mitchell. He has an inborn instinct for music, and is gifted in the task of finding new types of fine and gross textures for the sound of his drums. His first album Brian Blade Fellowship was magnificently received by the critics. The passion and love he feels for music will take shape in his drums, bringing to the Imaxinasons audience one of the best swing in the history of jazz. Anyone of Shorter’s partners –as shown above– may well head a most fruitful and successful jazz concert; in fact they often do. But this time we have the unprecedented opportunity to see them all playing together under the wise supervision of a living icon, a myth of jazz history. Mr. Wayne Shorter, age 75, one of the best tenor saxophones ever, will shake both our souls and hearts with excitement and passion.

His main areas of interest have always been improvisation, jazz and contemporary composition. Guy is now of the most prominent figures of the European free improvisation scenario. He was the bassist of a trio established with Howard Riley and Tony Oxley, and a salient member of the London Jazz Composers Orchestra, where he could display his amazing skills as a full-fledged instrumentalist. During the sixties, Guy was a member of the Iskra 1903 improvisation group with Derek Bailey and trombonist Paul Rutherford, a project that was taken up again at the end of the seventies with violinist Philipp Waschsmann taking the place of Bailey. During the eighties Guy was a member of Michael Nymann’s band. With classical violin instrumentalist Maya Homburger, he founded the independent label Maya Recordings, and is the editor of most of the label’s productions, for which improvisation is a priority. In this fashion he has published Arcus with Barre Philips and Obliquities with Evan Parker. But he also keeps his musical contact with his usual friends and colleagues, such as pianist Paul Plimeley and Swedish saxophonist Mats Gustafsson. Stefano Bollani «I Visionari»Auditorio Municipal. 3.07.2008, 22:00. Price: 3 €Stefano Bollani (Piano) Stefano BollaniImaxinasons is fortunate to have for this 2008 edition –and among a wide range of excellent composers and instrumentalists– one of those artists who, despite his young age, has already produced numerous relevant works, including Les fleurs bleus (2001), solo album Smat smat (2002), Concertone (2004), I visionari and Piano Solo (2006), among others. Since 1998, the year when he was honoured as the best novel talent by the Música Jazz Magazine, he has been accumulating prizes up to 2007, when he received the Hans Koller Preis to the best European jazz musician. Born in Italy in 1972, he approached the world of jazz in a somewhat unusual manner: when he was only six his aim was to become a pop star, and with such an idea in mind, he recorded a tape that was then sent to Renato Carosone, whose ‘advice’ was that he should listen to jazz and blues music more extensively. That was the time when he began to accompany his voice with the piano. He was accepted into the Florence High School of Music, and could work with some of the Italian pop stars of the time, such as Jovanotti and Laura Paussini. His collaborations in the jazz sphere included renowned artists like Pat Metheny, Michel Portal, Paolo Fresu and Phil Woods. In 1996, Bollani began to partner with trumpeter Enrico Rava –another one of the stars that will bring his music to Imaxinasons in the company of his own quintet–, who helped him get started into his solo career. This fruitful partnership is still bearing fruit today. Bollani finds his inspiration in artists like Bill Evans, Martial Solal and Keith Jarrett, among others. His style is a blend of ragtime and samba, pop and classic. In his own words, “what is important here is THE WAY you play and not WHAT you play”. Talks and jokes with his audience play an important part in his concerts: an interaction aimed at bringing fun for himself and for his public. Further information at: • I Visionari

After he won a number of jazz competitions, he settled in Copenhagen, where he gained ample skills as a versatile interpreter and musician. In parallel, he continued with his experiments, combining voices and studying their relationship with imagination, fantasy and feelings of vitality. Back in Spain, he formed a funky surrealist_duet with pianist Fran Rubio, and laid the foundations of his current band Prímital. Ibarretxe is the composer of five soundtracks for the screen, and of a number of _jingles, tunes and TV background pieces. PrímitalPrímital is a powerful funky-jazz sextet made up of a group of young instrumentalists under the leadership of Santi Ibarretxe. All six members participate in the project with their voices by playing their instruments while singing chorus, simultaneously and in polyphony, throughout the whole concert. Prímital is a modern show, a funky opera, which includes an original range of tunes loaded with amazing arrangements, and where improvisation plays a substantial part, the lyrics being composed with an onomatopoeic or so-called Prímital language. Still today Guy gives recitals in improvisation initiatives, and participates in contemporary and Baroque concerts. Agustí Fernández is the most prominent representative of Spain’s avant-garde music. He combines his thorough knowledge of modern and classical music with his taste for improvisation and jazz. He sees himself as a self-made artist, but attended classes at the High School of Music and in Darmstadt (Germany). His first solo piano album was Ardente (1985); afterwards he began to collaborate with international renowned artists of improvisation like Tom Cora, Peter Kowald, Carlos Zíngaro, Barry Guy and Evan Parker. Evan Parker belongs to the British free improvisation school of thought – a part of the European free jazz trends – but has been influenced by the cool jazz school in his latest compositions. He plays the tenor and soprano saxophones and characterizes himself as a follower of John Coltrane. Over his thirty-year-long professional career he has recorded well over 150 albums. Mats Gustafsson was born in Sweden and is currently one of the most successful and well-known artists in the field of improvisation, where he blends sensitivity with energy. He has worked with Barry Guy, violinist Philipp Wachsmann and cellist Günter Chritsmann… Hans Koch was a successful active soloist and chamber musician until the 1980s, when he approached the world of jazz. With Martin Schütz and Marco Käpelli, Koch established his first trio, where they experienced with composition and improvisation. Herb Robertson is a world known innovative instrumentalist, composer and arranger of both traditional and avant-garde jazz. He has played and recorded with Tim Berne, Mark Helias, John Zorn, George Gruntz, and the London Jazz Composers Orchestra, among others. Johannes Bauer earned a reputation for his joint works with his brother, Connie Bauer, and is one of the greatest German trombonists of the time. He has contributed most substantially to free jazz and to the new music movement of the 1970s as a composer for instrumentalists specialized in improvisation. Ake Holmlander, – one of the most salient Swedish musicians of the new generations of Nordic instrumentalists – is well-known throughout the world for his activities in the fields of free improvisation and the new music movement, and for his virtuosity with the tuba. Paul Lytton was in the 1970s a most prominent figure of improvisation and avant-garde jazz trends. Since 1969 he manufactures his own instruments. In Belgium – where he lives since 1975 – Lytton founded with Paul Lovens Po Torch Records, and the two collaborated in three albums. He usually plays in a trio formation with Evan Parker and Barry Guy. Raymond Strid is a leading figure of the Swedish jazz scene. His collaborations with Mats Gustafsson, Marylin Crispell and Barry Guy – either in the form of a quartet or as a trio – are frequent. He is very much wanted as a percussionist for large and small bands.

Michel Portal UnitTeatro-Cine Salesianos. 5.07.2008, 00:00. Price: FreeMichel Portal: Saxophone, clarinet Michel PortalMichel Portal is one of those artists who fit no classification: he plays classical and chamber music as well as jazz, and is regarded as one of the architects of modern European jazz. Portal is a clarinetist, but he plays the accordion and the soprano saxophone as well. Within the boundaries of classical music he performs regularly with Portuguese pianist Maria Joãel Pires. When jazz captures his attention Portal is always surrounded by first-class instrumentalists of the European sphere like Henri Texier, Daniel Humair, Martial Solal, Jean François and Jenny-Clark. In the States he has enjoyed the company of renowned musicians, including Jack DeJohnette, Mino Cinelu and Charlie Haden. He has played in duets with Bernard Lubat and Martial Solal, and has been the guest artist of different bands. Michel Portal will now share the stage with percussionist Daniel Humair, Balkan pianist Bojan Z and double bassist Bruno Chevillon. Daniel Humair – a self-taught instrumentalist – began his musical journey at a very early age. As a freelancer musician he soon had the opportunity to collaborate with some of the greatest representatives of European modern jazz trends, including Martial Solal, Jean Luc Ponty, Eddy Louiss, Henri Texier, François Jeanneau, Enrico Rava, Miroslav Vitous and Louis Sclavis. With Joachim Kuhn and Jean-François Jenny Clark, Humair established a successful trio that allowed him to fully develop his own philosophy on modern drum performance, as well as his activities as a composer. In this Michel Portal world tour, Humair’s main contribution to the band is his powerful and energetic musical rhythms. Double bassist Bruno Chevillon is currently one of Europe’s most talented instrumentalists. Trained in the academic environment, he now creates his own percussionist tones by tapping his fingers on the instrument resonating body, and shapes his original sounds by dragging the arch firmly against the strings of his double bass: in conclusion, he brings a full renewal to the traditional double bass sound. His collaborations spread over a wide range of first-class figures like jazz saxophonist André Jaume, Louis Sclavis, Ray Anderson, Tim Berne, Dave Douglas, Paul Motian, Ellery Eskelin, Joey Baron, Marc Ducret and Daniel Humair. Pianist Bojan Zulfikarpasic was introduced in the musical studies at the age of five. After serving in the Yugoslavian conscript army as a member of its Orchestra, he was strongly influenced by Balkan traditional music for the rest of his career. His instruction continued in Paris playing with different French bands, which could benefit from his eclectic nature. He was honoured as the Best Yugoslavian Jazzman in 1989, and has been collaborating with Henri Texier, Louis Sclavis, Dewey Redman, David Liebman, Reggie Workman, Aldo Romano, Billy Hart, John Abercrombie and N’guyen Lê. Price: 3€Markus Stockhausen (Trumpet) Markus StockhausenTrumpeter and composer Markus Stockhausen – with his well – known surname in contemporary music circles– parted company with his father in 2001 in order to (using his own words) “make my own music and have an spiritual horizon of my own”. After 25 years of shared interests and joint activities, he had decided to plunge in the waters of jazz music. Since then, he has been involved is different projects of varied nature. Electric Treasures is a ten – year-old trio with Arild Andersen and Patrice Héral. Acoustic Treasures is a largely delicate and melodious type of trio structure with clarinetist Tara Bouman and Mark Nauseef on the drums. Moving sounds is a virtuous duet with Tara Bouman which takes concerts to museums and churches. Variety and originality are the main characteristics of Stockhausen, an artist who does not fit any kind of standardized description. He modernized the existing double bass techniques by expanding its possibilities and introducing innovative musical procedures. As a composer, he is responsible for at least forty compositions, most of them string concerts, studies and quartets. He has participated in duets with Rohan de Saram and Markus Stockhausen, and has collaborated in dance shows and on the stage performances. He has collaborated with prestigious contemporary musicians, including Rohan de Saram, Mario Caroli, Stefano Scodanibbio, Tara Bouman and Markus Stockhausen, with whom his path crossed in 1986. His largely emotional interpretative strength renders his repertoire almost irrelevant, while the principal concepts of communication and experimentation take a leading role in his compositions. Within the boundaries of jazz, he has collaborated with Gary Peacock. Now Ottaviucci lives in Assisi, where he heads his Intuitive Music Workshop. Mark Nauseef American musician Mark Nauseef is the product of his own 30-year-long experience playing in international concerts, participating in numerous recordings in Europe, Asia and the US, and of the numerous exploratory activities on African, Indian and Indonesian music. Shankar, Hamza El Din, The Velvet Underground, Ronnie James Dio, Markus Stockhausen, Gary Moore, Kyai Kunbul (Javanese Gamelan), Ian Gillan, Tony Oxley, Tomaz Stanko, Edward Vesala’s Sound and Fury, Thelma Houston, David Torn, The Ladzekpo Brothers (Ghanaian music and dance), Charlie Mariano, Kudsi Erguner, and George Lewis, among others. Nauseef is a genuine musician whose art cannot be constrained by geographical boundaries of any kind. He is producer of both his own compositions and of different artists with varied musical styles, including modern and experimental musics and traditional Indian and Indonesian tunes. Atomic / School Days, featuring Ken VandermarkTeatro-Sala de concertos do Centro Cultural Caixanova. 6.07.2008, 23:00. Price: 12-€ (butaca); 11-€ (1º anf.); 10-€ (2º anf.); 9-€ (3º anf..).Magnus Broo: Trumpet Atomic is a Scandinavian quintet established in 1999 with the participation of Norwegian and Swedish artists. They mix patterns and influences of the European and American free jazz trends of the sixties and seventies with rock’n’roll and free improvisation, bringing fresh air and a profound renewal to jazz. They were acknowledged by the 2004 Jazzaldia Donostia Festival as one of the festival’s emerging bands. After they got in touch with saxophonist and clarinetist Ken Vandemark from Chicago in 2006, they established the School Days project, a gift for the ears of those attending their Imaxinasons concert. Ken VandermarkOriginal, creative and explosive Ken Vandermark is deemed as one of the greatest jazz instrumentalists of the current times. In order to give shape to all the compositional and improvisational ideas collected through long years of training, he established The Vandermark 5 in 1996, one of the many parallel bands which feature his musical compositions and enjoy his virtuosity as an instrumentalist. Live concerts performed all around Europe (Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Germany…) are the focus of attention of his band. His songs are a cocktail of jazz, contemporary music, funk, rock and traditional world music. However, Vandermark will always leave some room for improvisation, the focal point of all of his compositions, and one that allows for a constant re-interpretation of each tune by band members. The conjunction of these two powerful bands Atomic and School Days has brought together the energy of the two members they share, Paal Nilssen and Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten, and has given shape to an amazing octet, which features both complicated compositions and improvised tunes. In Vigo, they will present Atomic School Days, an innovative project loaded with energy and originality, and marked by the extraordinary variety of compositions resulting from the experienced contribution of all these jazz artists.
