The programme of concerts of Vigo’s Sixth International Jazz Festival Imaxina Sons was launched in the morning of Thursday 29th April during a press conference given by the City Councillor of Culture, Mr Xesús López, Programme Director of Social Affairs of Caixanova, Ms María Pereira Otero, and Artistic Director of the Festival, Mr Baldo Martínez. The Festival this year is from 23rd June to 4th July. The opening concert will feature French pianist Martial Solal and the closing session will be starred by the Dave Douglas Quintet, both at the Theatre and Concert Hall of Caixanova Cultural Centre. Innovations of the festival are, first, the use of the recently renovated City Council Concert Hall, and second, the possibility of purchasing season tickets for all concerts.
During his address Mr López emphasized the leading role of Imaxina Sons as a landmark “on the map of Europe’s greatest festivals”, and underlined the fact that this is an initiative which knows no limits. “Although it is true that this Festival is focused on European jazz, it is equally true that it often penetrates into Latin American and North American Jazz trends, as evidenced by the participation in this edition of the Festival of trumpeter Dave Douglas, one of the leading figures of US jazz. Douglas, who keeps strong links with European avant-garde jazz music, is considered by the critics as the most European of all US jazzmen”. The City Councillor also stressed the prominence given to Galician jazz, and pointed that “the Festival keeps on growing in parallel to the overall growth of jazz in Galicia”.
